RSGroup, which employs 4,000 people at its port facilities at Newton-on-Tyne in Northumberland, will also build the Alstom EMU at its new manufacturing plant in Newcastle on England’s northeast coast.

According to the Register, RSGroup was the chosen manufacturer after bidding for a series of major rail contracts in Europe.

RSGroup Chief Executive James Foster said: “This contract marks a further significant step in the development of our manufacturing capabilities and demonstrates the quality of our products and high standards of manufacturing in the north-east.

“We are looking forward to working alongside our customers, in particular Alstom, on their order for rail systems and associated rolling stock.”

Munich-based Alstom said it “expected to sign an agreement with RSG in the second half of this year, enabling the completion of its manufacturing commitment for Alstom Coradia IR family in the UK”.

The Alstom-branded Coradia IR EMUs are scheduled to be delivered between 2019 and 2020.

The Alstom design has six “air conditioned” carriages and is also designed to accommodate up to 15% more passengers.

The company claims the EMU will provide lower running costs than the HST-style multiple units operated by French train operators.
