Not long ago, people thought philosophers and scientists were hostile to one another and each was out to destroy the other.
But then someone suggested a philosophical argument in which each could come out as equal.
And so the philosopher David Stove, in his book “Philosophy Isn’t a Qualified Science,” argued that science can teach philosophy and that philosophy can teach science.
This is one of the best things I’ve read lately in the debate over Richard Dawkins’ book “The God Delusion.”
But there is also a good book, his book “A Devil’s Chaplain,” by the Princeton philosopher Julia Annas.
It is a great book that should be read and should be debated. There are few religious thinkers today more measured and sensible than this one.
She brings to bear, in the context of the Abrahamic religions, the most sophisticated and interesting philosophical accounts of the nature of God. She is also aware that this is now a global debate because of the growing number of secularists in China, India, and Russia.
And she is concerned, as well, with questions about such things as the bearing of children in the context of the Abrahamic religions, which then affect the way their followers behave in other areas of life.
Her treatment of God is the most penetrating and the most humane. And the questions raised are terrific.
This chapter on God itself is brilliant. The opening pages lay down the ground for a brilliant criticism of the idea of God as a sort of superior being to whom one is subject. We owe to her the clearest account we have of what it means to say that God is good.
What does that mean? And what, in fact, are good? Are these the sorts of things we can really meaningfully talk about?
She opens the chapter on God by invoking the problem of evil. It’s a good way of bringing in Richard’s
