Two models for forecasting emergency department (ED) visits were compared to assess their ability to predict future visits in a hospital in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Both models used data from ED patients over a 2-year period, 4 months prior to the intervention and 6 months after the intervention. One model used extra-temporal dynamics that consisted of a linear regression equation with multiple variables. The other model used a Type II multivariable fractional polynomial regression to assess the effect of the intervention on observed visit numbers. We applied the two models using both graphical and statistical analyses. A total of 622 visits occurred during the study period and the root mean squared errors (RMSE) for the two models were 6.2 and 17.8 visits respectively. Model 1 used an extra-temporal estimate based on the past 5 years (n = 1468) with an RMSE of 14.3. Model 2 used a local estimate based on the previous month and the intervention year (n = 46) with an RMSE of 15.0. Model 1 performed well in terms of prediction accuracy but it does not capture the non-linear effect of the intervention. Model 2 is more flexible but has a larger RMSE than the more parsimonious model 1.
