1. Image Adjustment Layers
Adobe Photoshop is a vector program that relies on pixel-based grids for image positioning. One of the most complex elements of a graphic design is the layer styles. This is essentially a shadow or a type, an outline that’s attached to an image to have an effect on its appearance. In this article, we’ll show you how to create simple graphic effects using layer styles.
First, you’ll have to create an image, and put it into one of three places: Photoshop’s canvas, a smart object or a layer.
In Photoshop’s canvas, an image will automatically have a layer placed on top of it. In a smart object, an image is inserted as a layer, but can later be deleted if desired. And a layer can be inserted as an image layer into a different, underlying image.
With layer styles, you can alter an image in an element of two different ways: as a background layer, or as a layer mask. A layer mask is a layer that can be moved and shaped. In the first image, a layer is masked with a black rectangle shape, resulting in an image that looks like the second image.

Step 1: Create a New File
I’m going to begin with a new file.
To create a new file, click File > New from the menu.
This will take you to a new document.
Leave the default settings, click OK, and Photoshop will open your new document for you.
Step 2: Open the File
In this tutorial, I’m going to start with a brand new file.
To open the file, drag it to the top of the Photoshop window.
Step 3: Create the Background
Now that you have an empty canvas, let’s start creating the background.
To begin, click Edit > Erase in the menu.
This will bring up a white window where you can select the area of the image you want to erase.
I’m going to select the background.
Click and drag the white background to a new layer.
The background will be added to a new layer.
Now that you have created the background, you can paint over it.
This will remove the background and reveal the underlying layer.
If you want to use a color in the document to paint over the background, first go to Edit > Fill and choose the color you want to use as the background, and then click OK.
Step 4: Add a Path
Click Edit > Free Transform and drag a marquee around one of the edges of the image.
