Many online support sites and forums are available for Photoshop users, and the Photoshop Central Web site, ` offers plenty of information about Photoshop and links to tutorials and other useful resources.
In this chapter, I show you how to create a composite image and add some fine details to your image. This is a common technique for retouching images and getting more detail and added interest. You can follow along with the recipes that are at the end of the chapter.
The first part of this chapter is about preparing the photos that are going to be used. In the latter half, I show you how to create the image you will be using for the composite.

Choosing the Right Photo
In the first part of this chapter, you see how to pick a good subject for your image.
Don’t forget your camera settings when you’re trying to figure out how to use a particular photo. If you’re taking a photo with a digital camera, review the camera’s manual for instruction on how to set the camera parameters.
When you have found the photo that you want to use, it’s time to open the image in Photoshop so that you can make your composite. In the second part of this chapter, I show you how to add a layer to a Photoshop file.
Turn on your monitor and make a simple image
A simple image (with few objects and no complicated compositions) is the easiest to work with in Photoshop. Try to keep your image simple so that you can easily control it.
For this exercise, you’ll need two separate photos: One that you keep as a “master” image, and one that you make into a background layer in Photoshop. I chose to use the same image for both parts, but it’s not important which image you use.
When I make a composite using the same photo twice, I always shoot it with a high shutter speed — at least 1/60 second or faster. This means that the background image should be too dark to be visible. Set your shutter speed on your camera to the fastest speed your camera allows.

Although it is a great editor, it lacks many high-end features that will be discussed in this post. It is very easy to use, though. The lack of advanced features may seem to be a disadvantage, but it is a personal choice.
Photoshop is still quite a demanding program. If you are just starting out in the industry or even if you have been in the industry for a couple of years, it is very important to work through the tutorials and gain confidence and experience.
After spending several years in Photoshop, I realized that there is not much in the way of free courses. Often, people come to me and say, “I’ve been using Photoshop and I know some stuff. I just don’t know anything else.” (Note: This is not because they aren’t interested in learning new things. As a matter of fact, I usually tell them to learn how to use Photoshop properly.)
If you really want to learn Photoshop from scratch, I would suggest the free tutorials on Lynda.com (formerly known as VideoLectures.net). They are lots of fun, lots of videos and tutorials and really, really easy to follow.

I especially liked the “The Beginner’s Photoshop Book” on Lynda.com. (I know, all these websites are overflowing with great tutorials. But this one works for me.)

Not only do you learn these things in the tutorials, you are encouraged to apply the concepts in real-world projects. After selecting a target area, hold down the command key and click the Clone Stamp tool. You will see a blue line appear with a white dot along the edge. Drag the white dot along the edge of the target area and a duplicate area of the selected area will be applied on to the document.

Brush presets allow you to apply a specific effect or style to a brush. There are over 80 pre-made brushes to choose from; you just need to select the one you want to use.
Each brush has a set of buttons attached to it that are useful for customizing the brush’s behavior or what the brush looks like. For example, you can make the brush move in a specific direction, or make it create a selection based on a color or shape.
Customize the brush by clicking the buttons on the brush slider. The Brush Presets menu opens. You can simply scroll through or use the arrow buttons to change which brush you are using.
You can change the size of a brush or make it larger or smaller using the brush slider at the bottom of the brushes list. The size of the brush is represented by the width of the slider.
Brushes can be deleted individually or as a group.
Make sure you have the selected brush in the brush list and then select the x of the brush in the right-hand corner. You can see a window pop up with the brush’s name and location in the document. Click on the trashcan icon to delete the brush. You can delete the group by selecting all the brushes in the group and clicking the trashcan icon.
To delete an entire brush, which is always a bad idea, highlight the brush in the brushlist. Then select Edit > Delete Brush.

Chile’s president, Michelle Bachelet, has passed a constitutional reform law that will allow her government to take ownership of the copper and gold mines, a key step in the country’s bid to exit from its mining boom.
Mining accounts for almost a third of Chile’s GDP and mining companies in Latin America are some of the world’s most profitable companies.
But following a campaign by environmentalists, many Chileans are concerned about the environmental impact of mining.
Legislation on the reform was passed on 30 April by the Social Democratic Party and the centre-right Christian Democrat Party, which controls Congress.
“This is a very powerful government. It will be able to take over from the private sector without court intervention,” says Christopher Garretson, a Chilean human rights lawyer who specialises in the mining industry.
‘No comment’
“There are people who say the government should continue with the private sector but then they’re expecting the same companies to be good operators, and those are the companies that are causing problems,” he says.
President Bachelet, who has pledged to govern in a centre-left way, has resisted calls from the opposition to approve the law before her election last year.
Miners’ unions and many Chilean voters are opposed to the reform because of environmental issues, including the impact of pollution and unexploded land mines left behind by illegal mining operations.
The two main opposition parties, the conservative Christian Democrat Party and the centre-right Nationalist Party, have repeatedly tried to alter the reform. They claim it was carried out with a lack of transparency.
The government has repeatedly said that the law, which was approved by a national referendum in November 2014, contains mechanisms to improve transparency and environmental protection, and that it will not put Chile at a disadvantage with regard to other mining companies that operate in the region.
The law does not give miners an absolute veto over the government’s plans. If a mine operator does not accept the takeover, the government can take the mine over without the court’s permission.
“If there is a trust or company that cannot finance the process, the government can proceed unilaterally,” says Mr Garretson.
