# Photoshop 101: The Fundamentals

This section presents the basics of how to use Photoshop. If you already have a copy, skip over the next few sections and go straight to Adding and Removing Objects. When necessary, you’ll find instructions to help you understand everything you see in this book.

## Opening a File

You must open any images you want to edit in Photoshop. The easiest way to do this is to go to File⇒Open. Photoshop opens a dialog where you can choose the name and filetype of the image (JPEG, TIFF, Photoshop PSD, etc.) you want to work on.

## Creating a New File

If you know the type of file you want to edit (see Photoshop filetypes), you can choose File⇒New to get a file with that type of file format. If you don’t know the file format you want, you can get a Photoshop document that you can play with. By default, Photoshop creates a plain old document, with no layers, no background, and no grids.

The easiest way to create a new file is to drag your image into the Photoshop window.

If you need to add layers, you must create a new layer for each new element. You should check out Layers to get more information on this, but for now, let’s say that you’ve got an image with just one layer. Your image is probably on the screen somewhere. If it isn’t, press S or press the Ctrl+Tab combination to bring up the workspace on the screen. Position your cursor in the document window so that the pixel you want to work on is highlighted (click the edge of the document window to move to the correct spot on the image). Figure 1-1 shows the initial view of an image with the cursor pointed to a pixel.

Sobhuza II

Sobhuza II (Mantshaali; ) (1547–1559) was the 17th king of the Zulu nation (17th king of the Zulu Kingdom of Shaka from 1563/5 to 1628), who reigned for 2.5 years. His nickname was Mavaza (meaning “Child of Heaven”) and iaZulu (meaning “people of Zululand”).

After the death of the great warrior Shaka, the Zulu kingdom slowly declined. After a period of heavy loss of population caused by epidemics in the 1670s, Zulu power as a nation was nearly destroyed in the 1720s when they were defeated in the Battle of Blood River. 2. Description of the Prior Art
Projection television receivers and the like commonly use phosphors to convert the radiation from a cathode ray tube back into the visible image. In such applications the conversion process is typically provided by a phosphor, which emits in a longer wavelength than that of the primary radiation emitted by the cathode ray tube. For example, a high-voltage electron beam in a cathode ray tube emits short wavelength blue visible radiation while a phosphor, such as a red emitting phosphor (R), emits long wavelength red light. By mixing the luminescent light emitted by the primary radiation with the luminescent light emitted by the phosphor, a color image can be produced.
In order to provide the mixing of the two radiations, a blue light image is provided to excite the phosphor and a red light image is provided to excite the phosphor. If the blue image and the red image are both provided in the same image path, the blue image will activate the red phosphor and the red image will activate the blue phosphor. If the red and blue images are separately provided on separate image paths, then the red will excite the blue phosphor and the blue will excite the red phosphor.
A typical phosphor comprises a host material doped with an activator ion. In a red R phosphor, the activator is commonly Eu, with Mn optionally in the host material. Green G and blue B phosphors typically have different activators, with the B activator typically being Ce.
