Structure of an Image
An image is a two-dimensional bitmap file. An image file stores an array of pixels that form the picture. (A pixel is the smallest individual picture element in the image.) The numerical value can be represented using three values, usually red, green, and blue, although other color models exist.
The layers of an image work like slices of a sandwich — you can cut out the middle of an image, for example, and create a new image that has the layers in front of the layers that were already in the image. The entire image is stored in layers. You can easily move those layers (and the underlying image data) to other areas of the program. If you’re new to Photoshop, you can have the program do most of the work for you by performing these tasks while you sort of view a bitmap version of the image — if you start one of the programs in Figure 9-1.

Photoshop is also a vector-editing program. Images made up of points that define the image are a kind of vector graphic format, and Photoshop allows you to manipulate, resize, and reshape those shapes.
The size of an image is critical. A good rule of thumb for sizing images is that the largest dimension of an image should be no larger than 1 megapixel.
Resizing, Cutting, and Cropping
When you first open a file, the program is in single-page mode. You see the image you’re working with (and nothing else, such as controls or toolbars), and you don’t see the right side of the file. As you edit the image, you leave single-page mode and return to double-page mode.
To reduce the size of the image, you can use the Image Size dialog box, shown in Figure 9-2. When you click the dialog box’s Resize button, the Image Size dialog box opens to enable you to resize the image.

Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a disease that affects approximately five million patients in the U.S. alone. During the last five years it has been estimated that there are over one million hospital admissions related to CHF, and this figure is increasing. Thus, digoxin is useful for managing CHF, but it has very serious limitations.
The treatment of CHF is extremely complex, and typically involves pharmacological treatments such as diuretics and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors; non-pharmacological treatments such as exercise; and/or devices such as cardiac resynchronization therapy or a biventricular pacemaker that synchronizes the respective heart contractions. The treatment depends on the underlying cause of the patient’s cardiac dysfunction. Pharmacological treatments reduce the ability of the heart to pump blood, typically by reducing blood flow through the lungs. Examples of such drugs include diuretics, ACE inhibitors, and digoxin; non-pharmacological treatments reduce blood pressure in the lungs, thereby reducing the workload of the heart; and devices attempt to improve the coordination of the heart to increase the amount of blood being pumped by the heart. However, the complex therapies mentioned above are directed to only the symptoms of CHF and not to the underlying causes of the symptoms.
