1. Field of the Invention
This invention relates to a gas sensor which is suitable as a gas sensor for detecting a gas which is harmful to human body or other living things, and to a manufacturing method therefor.
2. Description of the Related Art
An example of conventional sensors used for detecting an organic gas which is harmful to human body is an organic gas sensor disclosed in Japanese Patent Publication No. 5-236333. This device has a comb-type electrode consisting of a plurality of electrodes formed on a surface of a substrate, a potentiostat electrically connected to the comb-type electrode, an FET (Field Effect Transistor) electrically connected to the potentiostat, and a resistor electrically connected to the FET. The comb-type electrode has a structure in which a plurality of electrodes including a detecting electrode and a reference electrode are disposed in parallel on a substrate. An organic gas is fed through a diffusion layer to the detecting electrode in the comb-type electrode, and an output is taken from the FET by detecting a variation in the potential of the detecting electrode.
However, the conventional organic gas sensor encounters the following drawbacks. Firstly, when the comb-type electrode is formed by a micro discharge etching method, the electrode cannot be produced in a pattern shape which is arranged in parallel to each other because the electrodes are disposed alternately in a direction perpendicular to the direction of arranging. Consequently, the output characteristics of the sensor change from one to another depending on whether the electrodes of the comb-type electrode are distant or short-circuited. Moreover, the impedance of the comb-type electrode is a time-varying impedance owing to the existence of a resistance component caused by the changing line of a detector (an FET connected to the comb-type electrode) and a wiring (resistors).
Secondly, as the electrode is usually formed by applying a surface of a substrate with a paste containing metal particles and a binder, the electrode is susceptible to a change of the environment. Specifically, in the manufacturing process, it is hard to avoid the variation in temperature in the paste-application step. Consequently, the characteristics of the comb-type electrode vary from one to another.
Thirdly, an organic gas to be detected is adsorbed and retained in the diffusion layer. Consequently, the detecting accuracy of the sensor deteriorates.
