Equipped with the right applications, a computer can be of great help in virtually any domain of activity. When it comes to designing and precision, no other tool is as accurate as a computer. Moreover, specialized applications such as AutoCAD give you the possibility to design nearly anything ranging from art, to complex mechanical parts or even buildings.
Suitable for business environments and experienced users
After a decent amount of time spent installing the application on your system, you are ready to fire it up. Thanks to the office suite like interface, all of its features are cleverly organized in categories. At a first look, it looks easy enough to use, but the abundance of features it comes equipped with leaves room for second thoughts.
Create 2D and 3D objects
You can make use of basic geometrical shapes to define your objects, as well as draw custom ones. Needless to say that you can take advantage of a multitude of tools that aim to enhance precision. A grid can be enabled so that you can easily snap elements, as well as adding anchor points to fully customize shapes.
With a little imagination and patience on your behalf, nearly anything can be achieved. Available tools allow you to create 3D objects from scratch and have them fully enhanced with high-quality textures. A powerful navigation pane is put at your disposal so that you can carefully position the camera to get a clearer view of the area of interest.
Various export possibilities
Similar to a modern web browser, each project is displayed in its own tab. This comes in handy, especially for comparison views. Moreover, layouts and layers also play important roles, as it makes objects handling a little easier.
Sine the application is not the easiest to carry around, requiring a slightly sophisticated machine to properly run, there are several export options put at your disposal so that the projects itself can be moved around.
Aside from the application specific format, you can save as an image file of multiple types, PDF, FBX and a few more. Additionally, it can be sent via email, directly printed out on a sheet of paper, or even sent to a 3D printing service, if available.
To end with
All in all, AutoCAD remains one of the top applications used by professionals to achieve great precision with projects of nearly any type. It encourages usage with incredible offers for student licenses so you get acquainted with its abundance of features early on. A lot can be said about what it can and can't do, but the true surprise lies in discovering it step-by-step.

AutoCAD is both the best-selling and the most versatile desktop CAD program. The price of AutoCAD from its initial release in 1982 through 2013 was $295 (the current price is $1,300 for AutoCAD LT 2015). Since the early 2000s, Autodesk has been a free software company offering AutoCAD gratis.
AutoCAD is the most widely used CAD program in the world. It is used by more than one million designers, contractors, and drafters in more than 60 countries. AutoCAD is the primary program for the Autodesk Certified Associate (ACA) exam.
The first graphics rendering system that used AutoCAD was one that was used by the USAF (United States Air Force) at the F-117 and B-2 Stealth bomber design programs. AutoCAD and its predecessors were also the standard program on the Apollo computer used to design the Command/Service Module (C/S Module). The first Apollo computer used to design the Saturn V rocket was the P-7.
The company has released new versions of AutoCAD from time to time, with the major releases usually every four years. The major releases can contain multiple improvements, such as new features and bug fixes.
AutoCAD has become one of the most powerful and popular software programs available for the Apple Macintosh. Autodesk’s version of AutoCAD for Mac OS X includes all the basic features of the Windows version, as well as many new features, such as the ability to create 2D drawings on a Mac.
Designers, engineers, drafters, architects, and other professionals worldwide use AutoCAD to design, create, and modify 2D and 3D drawings and models, and also to publish their work to the World Wide Web or other networks.
(Other CAD programs, such as the Microsoft Excel-based Drawing Assistant, are not included in this article. If you are looking for a comprehensive overview of other CAD programs, see the related Wikipedia articles.)
AutoCAD is the direct descendent of several of Autodesk’s oldest products, all of which were designed in the 1970s. The first was a program that let architects create and modify 2D building plans. The second was a program for engineers to create and modify 2D structural designs. The third was a program to model and design 3D machines.

Application program interface (API)
The Application Program Interface (API) is the lowest level of automation provided by AutoCAD. Through the use of a programming language, the user can execute a command, or set of commands, which can be adjusted to change the results. These results can be changed again by another command, or set of commands, that work in conjunction with the first command, and so on. This creates a self-referential structure where a command can be modified, and the changes are reflected in the results of that same command. This can be seen in the following examples:
Keystrokes can be chained together by using the chaining operator, e.g. if “cr” is typed, then “lbr” will be typed in response.
A command can be modified by another command, called a modifier. e.g. command “lbr” can be modified by the command “move3D”
A command can be repeated by using the repeat command.
Two operators commonly used to modify the results of commands are the operator “EQ” and the operator “NE”. The difference between the two is that EQ modifies the result of the command, while NE modifies the result of the command but does not change the result. The following example demonstrates this:
The ability to modify the results of a command can be used for automation, but it can also be used in a variety of different ways, including:
Modifying the contents of a cell in a table, the contents of a variable, the contents of a workspace, or the contents of an active block
Validating the results of a command or set of commands by returning an error message or warning if the results do not satisfy the specification
Printing only certain pages or sections of a drawing
Defining the order in which a drawing is processed
Defining which command or set of commands is run for each drawing layer
Automating the process of creating a drawing
Defining a sequence of drawing commands to be run each time the application is run
Defining when a drawing is closed, such as when the drawing is saved
Creating a trace of drawing commands in a drawing to show the sequence in which the commands were run

What’s New in the AutoCAD?
Markup Assist will enable you to review and compare edits made to other drawings, for example. If you have several drawings open in AutoCAD, import the marked-up drawing and automatically change the marked-up drawing. (video: 1:40 min.)
Improve the quality of 3D renderings by reducing the graininess of objects using a new AutoCAD filter. (video: 6:05 min.)
Autodesk Professional Suite:
Save time and improve productivity by combining the power of the cloud with your desktop. From one central location, your desktop AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT files, DGNs and DWGs are available, so you can view and work with them as you need them, and access them from your mobile devices. In the cloud, data is stored and optimized for optimal performance.
AutoCAD will automatically sync across both the desktop and cloud, so you can update your drawings in the cloud when you’re working on a drawing on the desktop. AutoCAD will also automatically update the drawing on your desktop when you’re working on the cloud version. (video: 1:30 min.)
Rapidly explore and collaborate on your models using BIM 360, which features a 3D model viewer and a 3D browser. Design for new building types and share your plans with others who need to review them.
BIM 360 will be included in AutoCAD. (video: 1:35 min.)
Revisit the look and feel of your drawings with rich, high-quality color-accurate rendering. Revive the look and feel of your drawings with the multi-color DGN, which features a drawing style, color and LUT.
The multi-color DGN supports up to four input files for color, and supports the.dgn,.crv and.cmd DGN extension.
Multi-color output supports CMYK (cyan-magenta-yellow-key), RGB, and LAB (lightness-a-b) color. Output to PDF, dwg, EPS, AI, and SVG is supported. (video: 2:50 min.)
