Emerging evidence suggests an association between inflammation and cardiovascular events. C-reactive protein (CRP) is a well-known biomarker of inflammation. The association of serum levels of CRP with the risk of cardiovascular events in arterial hypertension, an important public health problem, has not been clarified yet. We performed a case-control study of 505 patients with arterial hypertension, followed for 17 ± 13 months. Cases were admitted for cardiovascular events [acute myocardial infarction (MI) or non-fatal acute ischemic stroke (AIS) or transient ischemic attack (TIA)]. Controls were admitted for routine checkup or for surgery of benign disease. The proportion of cases and controls was similar regarding gender, age, diabetes, cardiovascular risk, and lipids. The risk of cardiovascular events was directly related to serum levels of CRP and also to the CRP/albumin ratio. In multiple logistic regression analyses, adjusting for cardiovascular risk, BMI, cholesterol, and diabetes, independently associated with MI and AIS were age [odds ratio (OR) = 1.10, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.02-1.18 and OR = 1.11, 95% CI 1.03-1.20, respectively], non HDL-cholesterol (OR = 2.89, 95% CI 1.33-6.29 for MI and OR = 2.52, 95% CI 1.21-5.24 for AIS), CRP (OR = 1.45, 95% CI 1.15-1.85 for MI and OR = 1.32, 95% CI 1.04-1.66 for AIS), and CRP/albumin ratio (OR = 1.31, 95% CI 1.09-1.58 for MI and OR = 1.43, 95% CI 1.11-1.83 for AIS). In patients with arterial hypertension, CRP and the CRP/albumin ratio represent a useful biomarker of cardiovascular risk.Rick, do you have any comments on the note from me.

Rob, would you please handle this.
